3 ways to improve mood with texture

Can we change our emotions using texture?  

Absolutely! And what’s interesting is that it is not just about our sense of touch.  Our perception of texture is experienced though our sense of touch, but also our eyes, ears and even nose.  Consider the pleasure when you bite into a particularly fresh and crunchy apple!

We will often have an emotional reaction to certain textures, based on our experiences, the current environment and our cultural connection.  The spectrum of experiences also includes those impacted by texture sensitivity.

Here are 3 quick tips for engaging texture

1.      Use visual texture to increase interest and energy

Transform any boring ol’ wall into a living, breathing, interesting space with textured art.  Think paintings with paint that pops out, macrame tapestries, textured wallpaper or timber battens.   A space that feels dynamic and interesting keeps us feeling engaged and stimulated.

2.      Use soft texture to increase comfort and calm

We know how good we feel snuggled up on the couch on a winter’s night, with a soft fluffy blanket, or hopping into bed with freshy washed linen sheets. Using fabrics like wool, linen, soft cotton or velvet can influence your sense of calm as they interact with our skin.

3. Avoid texture overload to reduce stress

There are many people for whom certain textures cause distress. I can’t handle touching rough ceramics, and a friend of mine forcibly removes all her clothing tags for the irritation they cause.   For many, woolen beanies are super itchy, and some foods are left uneaten on the plate due to their texture (squishy cooked mushroom!!!).

So, before you buy, check floor tiles to see if you like the texture in bare feet and test pure wool throws or cushions for the itch factor!
