Can interior design help after divorce?

 A divorce or separation is NEVER easy, even the so-called amicable ones. 

Once upon a time, I too went through a divorce and used my home environment to build myself to be stronger and more ‘me’ by creating a space that felt safe, nurturing and solely mine. I was reminded of this recently after meeting divorce coach Sallyanne Hartnell, where we both agreed how important our home can be for healing and growth post separation or divorce. 

Inspired by my time with Sallyanne, I’d like to share a few design tips that can promote wellbeing after divorce or separation.

Here are 3 quick tips for home design after divorce or separation

1.      Create one space just for you

Start with your bedroom and layer it with new memories. Art that matters to you, colours you have chosen and definitely new bedding!   You’ll also find increased wellbeing if it is clutter free, and if you use soft textiles and calming colours (blues, greens, pastels).  Expressing your anger by painting a fire-engine-red feature wall may not lead to the calm you’re hoping for!  

2.      Experiment with decor to draw out the new you

You know how a rebound relationship is not necessarily going to be ‘The One’? The same can be said for the furniture and décor you purchase post-separation.  So, play around… with decor!  And as money security is often at the forefront of your mind at this time, feel free to hit the thrift shops or express yourself with some DIY.

3. Layer your space with positive keepsakes. 

Really maximise the concept of neuro-nostalgia (being prompted to remember positive experiences) by ensuring each piece of art, figurine and cushion reminds you of a positive memory or experience.
