How to return to work after a long absence

Who drags their feet going back to work after the Christmas holiday break?

It might start with mild irritability, followed by some serious grumps, culminating in all-out rage on the Sunday night before the big day.

In any case, to ease the transition back to a place that frowns on margaritas at lunch, you can set up your environment to help you settle back in.

Here are 3 quick tips for returning to the workplace after a break

1.      Wear your mood

We know from colour psychology that different colours, tones and shades can have a significant impact on our mood.

For example, if you need a little push to feel energetic and motivated, pop on a spot of yellow to boost your energy, or some orange if you want to feel more courageous.

But if you’re a bit stressed about being back at work, greens and blues will help you feel calm.

2.      Grab a view of nature

Research shows that a view of nature at work means we tend to be more productive, have reduced stress and improved mental health.  Even a small indoor plant can boost morale, as well as our creativity!

3. Ditch desk clutter except maybe keep something personal

Clutter can reduce our creativity, our focus and productivity, and can add a subtle sense of overwhelm to the entire day.  So, if you haven’t already, start the year with a clean and clear working space.

Conversely, you could ADD into your space something personal. One study found that employees who personalized their workspace with items like pictures or plants were up to 25% more productive than those who worked in a more pristine environment.

There’s a balance to be struck in there somewhere!
